Trauma & POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD & cptsd)

What is Trauma

 Trauma is an emotional response to a distressing event that can have lasting effects on a person's life. Traumatic events can be one-time incidents, such as a violent attack or natural disaster, or ongoing stress, such as abuse or a long-term illness. Trauma can impact a person's sense of safety, self, and ability to regulate emotions.  


Trauma can happen to anyone at any age, and the effects can last long after the event. Symptoms typically last from a few days to a few months, but painful memories or emotions can resurface at any time, especially in response to triggers. 

What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

 PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. Unlike normal responses to trauma that may fade with time, PTSD symptoms persist and can significantly impact daily life.

Key aspects of PTSD include:

Core Symptoms:

  • Re-experiencing the trauma (flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive memories)
  • Avoidance of trauma-related triggers (places, situations, thoughts)
  • Negative changes in thoughts and mood (detachment, negative self-image, difficulty experiencing positive emotions)
  • Changes in physical and emotional reactions (being easily startled, always on guard, difficulty sleeping, angry outbursts)

What is Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (Complex PTSD)

 Complex PTSD (CPTSD) is a condition that develops from prolonged, repeated trauma, particularly during vulnerable periods like childhood or in situations where escape is difficult or impossible. It differs from PTSD in that it results from chronic trauma rather than single events.

Key Characteristics of CPTSD:

Emotional Regulation Difficulties:

  • Intense emotional responses
  • Difficulty managing feelings
  • Persistent sadness or depression
  • Explosive anger or complete emotional shutdown
  • Chronic feelings of emptiness

What are the best therapies to use for trauma

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing) is a form of Psychotherapy that helps to process and recover from past experiences that are affecting your mental health and well-being. It involves using side to side eye movements combined with talk therapy in a specific and structured format. Combined with Hypnotherapy and EFT, EMDR Therapy is great for Resolving Trauma, PTSD & CPTSD.

EMDR is recognised by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) in 2005 as an effective treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It was originally used with great effect on veterans of the Vietnam War. Today, Prince Harry has also had EMDR & EFT therapy.
